One of our favorite things to do on weekends is visit the nearby quirky and antique city of Valparaiso.
My husband works near the port, and we haven't even scratched the surface of all the nooks and crannies to explore. It reminds me of my beloved San Francisco.

The cerros (hills) are climbed by wooden funiculars called ascensores.
They are over one hundred years old! They shake, rattle, and lurch and are a bit frightening at first, but we've come to love the thrill. Last Sunday we went up to Cerros Concepcion and Alegre, enjoyed a lengthy breakfast at El Desayunador (the breakfaster?), and just wandered around, ducking into funky little shops, cafe's, and art galleries.

There is a great scene in the movie 'The Motorcycle Diaries' where Che and his buddy Alberto take an ascensor, and you can see Valparaiso in the background. Well, they didn't have to change much to make it look like 1952!
The bustling port below.
Ahhhh... the joy that is a cafe cortado
We can't go one block without meeting a (usually) friendly doggie or cat.
More on that in another post.
Donald Duck car! (My family's nickname for these old citroens)
Cafe del Jardin. This is how I want my balcony to look!
I am getting there. Bought those jugs on the side of the road recently, and my mom sent me the preserved boxwood ball for Christmas.
Volvo, for life!
